(ST. PETERSBURG, FL) July 17, 2006 -- Lifestyle Family
Fitness announced today it
will extend the free membership program for teenagers through the end of 2006. Due to
overwhelming response, the company will continue to invite all teens between the ages of
12 and 17 to enjoy a free two-month matinee membership at any of the 37 locations
throughout Florida and Ohio. The program, initially slated to run from June 15 through
August 15, registered more than 1,860 teens in the first month.
“The free summer membership program for teenagers has been a great success and we
are excited to extend that offer through the end of the year,” said Geoff Dyer, Lifestyle
Family
Fitness, CEO. “By allowing teenagers to try our clubs free for two months, we are
instilling a love for
Fitness at an early age. Obesity is a preventable medical condition
and Lifestyle Family
Fitness is committed to helping create a generation of fit and
healthy young adults.”
To participate in the program, parents are required to register their teens. Once registered,
teens can visit the clubs unaccompanied by a parent. Teenagers are requested to finish
using the club by 5p.m. In addition to the membership, teens are encouraged to
participate in group
Fitness classes including BODYJAM®, BODYSTEP®,
BODYPUMP®, BODYFLOW®, BODYATTACK® and BODYCOMBAT®.
Obesity rates among teenagers have dramatically risen over the past decade. The Center
for Disease Control’s 2003-2004 National
Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
discovered that more than 17 percent of adolescents in the United States are considered
obese. This marks a 65 percent increase from obesity levels 10 years ago.
Overweight teenagers are at a higher risk for disease such as hypertension, diabetes and
sleep apnea. The rise in adolescent obesity can be linked to increased portion sizes,
consuming sugary beverages, lack of exercise and increased television viewing and
gaming.
