Saving Lives in HENDERSON, OH

Tuesday, September 18, 2007, was a memorable day at the Henderson, OH Club. Not one, but two Members were in distress.

During mid-afternoon, the first incident involved one of our younger members, an athletic nurse in apparently perfect Health, who suddenly fell faint to the floor in an obscure corner of the facility. PTs, MSRs, and the COM rushed to the scene, and with all the right moves, helped to revive her quickly. One person took her pulse, another supported her head while a cushion was placed underneath as support, and another ran to get some water and a power bar. After several minutes, she was eventually able to answer questions coherently, and then rise to her feet and walk out on her own! All on hand were prepared to use the AED unit and CPR techniques if that became necessary. Thankfully, it was not necessary, but those were some touchy moments.

Later that evening, at 7:15pm, 49-year old member since 2003, Mr. B., collapsed while working out on one of the Life Fitness Total Body Trainers.

A Member witnessed the collapse and called for help. PT James Buffington was the first responder and found Mr. B. to be breathless, pulse-less, and unresponsive. As taught during his certification training, James followed one of the first steps and instructed MSR Mike Baker to call "911". MSR Supervisor Gabe Magumba went to the street to wait for EMS to arrive.

At this time, a Member assisted James in performing CPR while three other trainers, Billy Moritz, Shane Fobian, and Kevin Bonner, established a perimeter around the incident. PT Fredrick Entemann brought the AED to the scene and the electrodes were applied by PTM Casey Imhoff. The AED unit functioned according to design by analyzing the heart rhythm of the victim and applying shocks as required.

A few minutes later, Mr. B. came around and the team of PTs placed him in the recovery position, keeping him comfortable until the arrival of EMS at 7:23pm. The EMS team stabilized Mr. B. and transported him to the hospital.

The next morning, Mr. B's brother came to the club. After expressing his gratitude to all of us, he let us know that Mr. B. was in cardiac arrest when the AED was applied and required triple bypass surgery! Quick thinking and everyone’s preparedness saved his life!

Many thanks go to our Lifestyle Team Members for their life-saving skill and quick responsiveness.

All in a day’s work!

AED/CPR Certification Training is open to all LFF Team Members.
